"What is an in-house designer's social responsibility"

When it comes to representation and diversity within the work designers create, what power do we have to enforce, establish or break thoughtless/thoughtful ideas of people? Is it our job to address greater concerns via our work? Join Joshua as explains how you can red flag concerns you may have in briefs or directions and offers tools to help make diversity a frictionless part of the design process. He’ll also help you learn how to navigate through the thought, “I don’t know what I don’t know,” and he’ll show why it’s so important to lead from the bottom up.

"Let's talk about representation"
"...and how representation relates to our responsibilites as in-house designers"
"Summer 2020 was a time of unrest. I was participating in protests around the city, and I was also an in-house designer at that time."
"I found myself speaking up during a meeting about comms, company wide because I wasn't seeing those who needed representation, be represented at that table."
"After rediscovering my voice, I wondered about my responsibility to use it as a designer."
"It's not just about including people in our work, it's about making people feel seen and heard."
"While it's the job of all designers to communicate, connect and compel, we can also leave people unseen."
"There is a clear gap of lived experience."
"We can assume two things from posts like this: one, it was probably not designed by an inclusive voice; two, the feelings of those celebrated by the even in question aren't being sincerely considered."
"I had to answer this question in crafting an identity fothe Black Employee Network..."
"The Black Employee Network (BEN) initiative from Mediabrands Canada was established in 2020 to address the lack of diversity within the media industry. An identity that maintained cultural and professional integrity by reflecting the nuance, sophistication, and talent of Black employees."
